The Centre for Environment, Fisheries, and Aquaculture Science (Cefas) is inviting applications for its Summer Internship Graduate Programme 2024. This programme offers a unique opportunity for recent graduates and current students to gain hands-on experience in marine and freshwater science, environmental protection, and fisheries management. Interns will work alongside leading scientists and experts, contributing to cutting-edge research and gaining valuable industry insights.
Responsibilities
- Research Support: Assist in ongoing research projects related to marine and freshwater environments, including data collection, analysis, and reporting.
- Fieldwork: Participate in field surveys, sampling, and environmental monitoring activities.
- Laboratory Work: Support laboratory-based research, including sample processing, chemical analysis, and equipment maintenance.
- Data Management: Contribute to data entry, analysis, and visualization tasks using software such as Excel, R, or GIS.
- Literature Review: Conduct literature reviews to support research initiatives and contribute to the development of scientific reports.
- Collaboration: Work collaboratively with Cefas scientists, partners, and stakeholders to achieve project goals.
- Presentation: Present findings to colleagues and potentially at internal seminars or workshops.

Requirements
- Education: Currently enrolled in or a recent graduate of a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Marine Biology, Environmental Science, Fisheries Management, Oceanography, or a related field.
- Availability: Able to commit to the full duration of the internship (8-12 weeks).
- Location: Willingness to relocate to Cefas locations if necessary.
Skills
- Research Skills: Strong analytical skills, with the ability to conduct research, analyze data, and interpret results.
- Technical Skills: Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint); experience with data analysis software (e.g., R, GIS) is a plus.
- Communication Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present research findings clearly.
- Teamwork: Ability to work effectively in a team environment and contribute to collaborative projects.
- Problem-Solving: Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to think critically.
Experience
- Fieldwork Experience: Previous experience in fieldwork, particularly in marine or freshwater environments, is highly desirable.
- Laboratory Experience: Familiarity with laboratory procedures, including sample processing and chemical analysis, is beneficial.
- Data Analysis: Experience in data management and statistical analysis is an advantage.
