The Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (DSTL) is inviting applications for its 2024 Internship Program for Graduate Students. DSTL is at the forefront of scientific research and development for the UK’s defense and security. This internship program offers graduate students the opportunity to work on cutting-edge projects that directly impact national security. Interns will gain valuable experience working alongside leading scientists, engineers, and analysts in fields such as Cybersecurity, Artificial Intelligence, Engineering, Data Science, and Operational Analysis.

Responsibilities:

  • Support ongoing research and development projects in areas such as Cybersecurity, Artificial Intelligence, Robotics, Data Science, and Engineering.
  • Conduct data analysis, modeling, and simulations to assist in the development of innovative defense solutions.
  • Work with senior scientists and engineers to design and implement experiments, tests, and prototypes.
  • Participate in cross-disciplinary teams to solve complex technical problems related to national defense and security.
  • Document findings, prepare technical reports, and present research outcomes to internal teams and stakeholders.
  • Assist in the development of software tools, algorithms, and models to support defense research initiatives.
  • Collaborate with other departments and contribute ideas for improving research methodologies and processes.

Requirements:

  • Currently enrolled in a graduate program (MSc, MEng, PhD) in a relevant field such as Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, Cybersecurity, Data Science, or related disciplines.
  • A strong academic record and demonstrated interest in defense, security, and research and development.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain the necessary UK security clearance for the duration of the internship.
  • Available to commit to a full-time or part-time schedule for a duration of 10-12 weeks, depending on project requirements.

Skills:

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to work on complex technical challenges.
  • Excellent communication skills for effectively presenting research findings and collaborating with team members.
  • Proficiency in relevant software tools, programming languages (e.g., Python, R, MATLAB), and modeling techniques.

Experience:

  • Previous research experience or internships in defense, cybersecurity, data science, engineering, or related fields is highly desirable.
