Job Description:

The London Borough of Hackney is pleased to offer an Internship Program for 2024, providing students and recent graduates with an opportunity to gain hands-on experience in local government. This program is designed to equip participants with practical skills, professional development, and an understanding of how local government functions in one of London’s most diverse and vibrant communities. Interns will work across various departments, supporting initiatives that make a real difference to the lives of Hackney residents.

Responsibilities:

  • Support different departments such as Housing, Community Services, Planning, Environmental Health, and more with daily tasks and projects.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of policies and programs aimed at improving local services.
  • Conduct research and data analysis to inform policy decisions and program evaluations.
  • Prepare reports, briefings, and presentations for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Engage with local residents, community groups, and stakeholders to gather feedback and support community engagement initiatives.
  • Participate in the organization of events, workshops, and public meetings to promote council services and community involvement.
  • Provide administrative support, including managing correspondence, scheduling meetings, and maintaining records.
  • Collaborate with team members on special projects and initiatives to address key local issues.

Qualifications:

  • Must be a current university student or recent graduate (within the last 2 years) from a recognized institution.
  • Studying or having completed a degree in Public Administration, Social Sciences, Urban Planning, Environmental Studies, Business, or a related field.
  • Minimum age of 18 years at the time of application.
  • A genuine interest in local government and public service.

Experience:

  • No prior professional work experience is required.
  • Previous internship, voluntary, or part-time work experience in public service, research, community engagement, or administrative roles is desirable.
  • Experience in project work, event planning, or community outreach will be considered an advantage.

Skills:

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with diverse communities.
  • Good organizational and time management abilities, with attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills, with a proactive and adaptable approach.
